For our first dinner in Greece I really wanted to go somewhere romantic. I wanted a place that screamed leave your kids at home (hey it was the first night of our big baby free adventure!) But perhaps most importantly I wanted somewhere with a perfect view of that Santorini sunset I’d heard so much about. Athenian House in Imerovigli ticked all those boxes.
This was the only restaurant we made a reservation for in advance. If you want a table right on the window I’d recommend making one (and believe me you want a table right on the window!) I emailed them and they told me via email that I’d need to call with a credit card to reserve the table, I was very hesitant to do this so I was relieved that when I called they never brought up needing a credit card!

Before our meal began they served us fresh bread. I asked for a little olive oil to dip my bread in and was astounded at the beautiful tray they brought out! A complimentary assortment of 3 different olive oils to try. For our appetizer we went with the Grilled Calamari dish. It was unlike any grilled calamari I’d ever had! Calamari over Potato “risotto”, crispy onions, with cuttlefish ink & citrus flavor olive oil. It was very rich but in the best possible way. They also provided a complimentary filo dough and feta cheese appetizer!
For my main dish I went with the Dry Aged Beef & Lamb Kebab. It came with the most amazing fresh pita and truffle tzatziki. Gabe chose the Athenian Lamb Chop Moussaka. He is not usually a fan of lamb but he decided to try it because it was their house specialty. Let’s just say Gabe left that meal a big fan of lamb!

After our wonderful meal we were stuffed and decided to skip dessert (even though deep down I really wanted it.) Well lucky for us the restaurant brought us the Greek Pavlova on the house! And even luckier for me this was the desert I was eyeing! It was a homemade meringue with mastiha ice cream, fig marmalade and bee honeycomb. The best way I can describe it is interesting. It wasn’t bad but there was something so strange about it-each bite almost stung the tip of my tongue. Not in a bad way more in a whoa what is this flavor explosion in my mouth kind of way. As I was writing this blog post I decided to google what mastiha was, seeing as that was the type of ice cream we had. It turns out mastiha is a resin obtained from mastic tree. The flavor is bitter at first, but after some chewing, it releases a refreshing, slightly pine or cedar-like flavor. Which is wild because that is verbatim what we were tasting but having a hard time putting into words, probably because we had no idea what the hell mashtiha ice cream was.

As you can tell, our meal was wonderful. Even better than that was the service and the view. We had literally the nicest waiter. I don’t know why they kept brining us complimentary dishes but we certainly appreciated it! And the view, oh my God the view. The sunset in Santorini truly is magical. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
If you are ever in Santorini and looking for a wonderful meal in the most romantic setting I highly recommend Athenian House.
Wow, what an incredible trip! Thanks for sharing
