When we first started planning our trip to Greece we had a lot of people surprised we were going to Mykonos. We heard a lot of “It’s just a big party town” or “It’s the Las Vegas of Greece minus the casinos” To be honest I was a bit surprised by their reactions because when I think of Greece I just automatically think of Santorini and Mykonos. After visiting, I can come back and write that I DO recommend Mykonos for everyone.
We decided to take the ferry from Santorini to Mykonos which took about 2 ½ hours (quick tip if you rent a car from Kronos in Santorini you can return it directly in front of the Ferry at the port which will save you money on a taxi ride) The ferry was swift and the waters were very calm so we lucked out. However, a word to the wise they board these ferries FAST. Do not fall behind when in line. There was a huge crowd surrounding the ferry that we just assumed were all people in line to get on-turns out they were waiting for the next ferry. I am not exaggerating when I say Gabe and I were the last people on our ferry and we had been sitting in the ferry port an hour early. I am only telling you this to warn you that it is total chaos at the ferry port but somehow it all works out! Just don’t be fooled into thinking there is a line for your ferry so you have time to relax!

Once we arrived in Mykonos and dropped off our bags we headed straight into Mykonos Town to start exploring. Matoyianni Street is the main drag with tons of shops and restaurants. Most of the streets in Mykonos Town are very confusing. If you see a store that looks interesting to you or a bar you want check out you should stop because chances are you may not be able to find it again! The streets were literally designed like a maze to confuse pirates. Sometimes you’ll turn a corner and uncover a cute little boutique or church other times you’ll run into a dead-end.

For our first meal in Mykonos we decided to go to Avra. This restaurant is located in the most lovely courtyard garden. We were there in May and I can’t even imagine how beautiful it must be at the end of summer with the flowers in full bloom! We started with the stuffed vine leaves which were amazing-although we had never eaten them before so we had to google if you were actually supposed to eat the vine leaves (you were and we did!) I then had the grilled pork fillet in a honey thyme sauce with purred potato and grilled vegetables-it was incredible! Overall it was an amazing meal that was pretty reasonably priced for such a stunning location.

It was a great first evening spent in Mykonos!
